Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Uganda

Season: High Summer | January Avg. Temp: 17°C (63°F)

Gorilla trekking deep in the heart of Bwindi’s ancient jungle.

January generally coincides with a short dry spell, making it easier and more comfortable to trek because there is less rain and mud.

All gorilla-trekking destinations issue a limited number of permits per day and there is limited accommodation available in remote parks like Bwindi. Book as soon as you decide to go trekking to avoid disappointment – peak dry season is very popular.

Samburu National Reserve - Kenya

Season: High Summer | February Avg. Temp: 28°C (82°F)

Game drives offer the chance to spot the Samburu Special 5—endemic species including the endangered Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk.

Samburu, an arid region of Kenya, comes to life after the summer rains, with doum palm groves and thorny scrub offering abundant grazing. Keep an eye out for baby gerenuks.

Great news for spontaneous travelers—Samburu is typically open to last-minute bookings during this time of year.

All about your first safari to Kenya.

Bwindi & Volcanoes National Park - Uganda & Rwanda

Season: Winter | Average Temperature (June): 20°C / 66°F

Experience world-class gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — two of Africa’s premier primate safari destinations.

Though both parks sit in Africa’s equatorial rainforest, June brings drier conditions — Uganda sees 80% less rain than March, and Rwanda drops 90% from April — making trekking easier and lighting better for photography.

June is peak season for gorilla trekking, with limited permits and lodge availability. Booking up to a year in advance is recommended — and gives you time to get trek-fit!

Grumeti Reserve - Tanzania

Season: Winter | Average Temperature (June): 21°C / 70°F

Experience the awe-inspiring spectacle of thousands of wildebeest thundering across the Grumeti River, part of the legendary Great Migration through the Serengeti–Masai Mara ecosystem — an unforgettable adventure.

The Grumeti River crossings are among the most dramatic moments of the Wildebeest Migration — but unlike the crowded Mara, they happen in the private Grumeti Reserve, offering a more exclusive, crowd-free safari experience.

The Grumeti River crossings are a top highlight of the Migration, highly sought after by safari enthusiasts. With limited accommodation in the area, we recommend booking up to a year in advance.

Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

Season: Winter | Average Temperature (June): 19°C / 66°F

Classic game viewing without the crowds and one of the best destinations for honeymoons in June.

The weather is cooler and drier, and the animals aren’t venturing too far from water or grazing as winter settles in, making for superb game viewing. The other bonus is that the Wildebeest Migration is generally still in the Grumeti and Serengeti in Tanzania, making Kenya far less crowded. You may not see the Migration but you will see the Masai Mara’s iconic sunsets and rolling savannah.

Mid-year is high or peak safari season across Africa, and we’d always advise booking up to a year or at least six months in advance if you have your heart set on a particular lodge or if you want to avoid disappointment.

first-timer’s guide to a Kenya safari and what to expect in the Mara.

Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

Season: Winter | Average Temperature (July): 19°C / 66°F

Wildebeest, wildebeest, and more wildebeest—followed closely by massive Nile crocodiles, prides of lions, stealthy leopards, and lightning-fast cheetahs.

The Wildebeest Migration, naturally. By mid-year, most herds have crossed the Mara River and are grazing across Kenya. With peak safari season, dry weather, and wildebeest everywhere, it’s an unbeatable experience.

We’re serious when we recommend booking up to a year in advance for the Mara’s private concessions—they offer a superior experience. Mid-year is East Africa’s hottest season, and lodges fill up fast. If you can’t plan that far ahead, aim to book at least six months before travel to secure your preferred accommodation.

Nyerere National Park - Tanzania

Season: Winter | Average Temperature (August): 22°C / 71°F

Epic peak-season game viewing—minus the crowds!

The vast Nyerere Reserve offers incredible safari experiences—especially now, when most visitors flock to the Serengeti and Maasai Mara for the Wildebeest Migration. This means you get amazing wildlife sightings with plenty of space to yourself.

Since it’s peak season, don’t wait too long to contact your Africa Safari Expert. We recommend booking at least three months before your departure to secure your spot.

Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

Season: Spring | Average Temperature (September): 20°C / 68°F

Witness massive wildebeest herds grazing across the Mara’s lush, green plains — a breathtaking scene of nature at its peak.

With the drama of river crossings behind them, the wildebeest settle into the Mara’s rich grasslands to refuel — especially the pregnant females. Meanwhile, lions and leopards patiently stalk the herds, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

September is still peak season, so it’s wise to book at least six months ahead to secure your preferred accommodation.

Ruaha & Katavi National Parks - Tanzania

Season: Spring | Average Temperature (September): 22°C | 71°F

Superb wildlife and birding in Tanzania’s hidden gems. September’s seclusion and serenity make it an ideal month for a romantic safari honeymoon.

Not as famous as the Serengeti and without the massive wildebeest herds, Katavi and Ruaha offer authentic wilderness with rustic charm. Both parks are home to big cats, wild dogs, large buffalo and elephant herds, and over 500 bird species.

If you tend to procrastinate or love last-minute adventures, Ruaha and Katavi are great options that can still welcome you.

Exploring Tanzania beyond the usual trails: Your guide to off-the-beaten-path adventures.

Samburu National Reserve - Kenya

Season | Spring | Average Temperature for October | 28°C | 82°F

Rocky outcrops home to klipspringers and rock hyrax are surrounded by green plains—one of the best spots to see the gerenuk, the charming antelope known for standing on its hind legs for minutes to reach leaves.

Located in northern Kenya, Samburu is a hidden safari gem—less famous than the Masai Mara but equally rewarding. Its lodges are exceptional, often built into the rocky hills and boulders that define the landscape.

As an off-the-beaten-path destination, Samburu is perfect for last-minute travelers or those who prefer not to book safaris too far in advance.

A Kenya safari guide for first-timers.

Zanzibar Archipelago - Tanzania

Season: Summer | Average Temperature in November: 26°C (79°F)

Unwind after your safari on the stunning islands of the Indian Ocean, explore historic Stone Town for unique gifts, and—if you’re feeling adventurous—snorkel or dive with giant whale sharks, typically spotted from November.

Safaris are thrilling but can be exhausting with early mornings, late nights, and bumpy roads. Unwind on idyllic islands like Thanda, Pemba, or luxury Mnemba for a true recharge. Zanzibar sees just nine rainy days this month, with top-notch diving visibility.

If diving with whale sharks is your goal, book your beach lodge early. For a more relaxed trip of shopping and sun-lounging, you can book later—though keep in mind Zanzibar is a popular honeymoon spot.

Discover why Zanzibar is a true beach paradise, where ancient dhows still glide across crystal-clear waters.
Explore what to expect on a tour of Stone Town—its winding alleys, rich history, and vibrant culture.

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

Season: Summer | Average Temperature in November: 22°C (72°F)

Wildebeest begin migrating from Kenya’s Masai Mara to the Southern Serengeti for birthing and grazing. Their movement draws predators like lions, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, and cheetahs—especially in the Seronera Valley, famed for its high cheetah density. Many other species also start giving birth around this time.

The Wildebeest Migration follows the rains, and by November, short rains revive grazing lands. This marks the start of the Green Season, with better availability and lower rates. Don’t worry—showers are brief and usually in the afternoon.

A Green Season bonus: no need to book a year in advance like peak season. When you’re ready to explore the Southern Serengeti in November, just reach out to your Africa Safari Expert.

Mahale Mountains - Tanzania

Season: Summer | Average Temperature in December: 20°C (68°F)

Trek habituated chimpanzee families in Mahale rainforest. Endangered due to poaching and habitat loss, these chimps are being protected through responsible travel—just like gorillas in Central Africa.

Early rains encourage the growth of the chimps’ favorite fruits, seeds, and nuts, drawing them down from the treetops to forage. Chimp trekking is fun and memorable, as they’re active and expressive.

Accommodation and trekking permits in Mahale are limited, so book early. You’ll also need a few months to get walking fit—the chimps move fast through dense, humid rainforest. To make the most of your visit, be ready to keep up.

Tanzania is a world in one country—home to vast savannas, snowy peaks, pristine beaches, and rich cultures. The Mahale Mountains are just one captivating part of this diverse and extraordinary land.
